La Paz: The State Capital of Baja Sur

La Paz, Baja California Sur, Mexico, was officially founded on May 3, 1535, by Hernán Cortés, the Spanish conquistador. It recently celebrated its 488th birthday! The city has a rich history. It is the capital of the state of Baja California Sur. Baja Sur is the Mexican state that includes such tourist destinations as Cabo San Lucas, San Jose del Cabo, Pescadero, Todos Santos, La Ribera, Cabo Pulmo, Los Barriles, La Ventana, Loreto, and Mulege. Located on the opposite side of the Baja Peninsula from the more famous Cabo San Lucas, La Paz is the largest of the Baja Sur cities. It is famously known as the gateway to the inside Sea of Cortez, also known as the Gulf of California.

The inside sea is arguably the 2nd most biologically diverse marine environment on the planet. Four universities are based in La Paz. Universidad Autónoma de Baja California Sur offers advanced degrees in marine biology. La Paz is the perfect setting for marine biology, which attracts students from around the world. It is often said that there are more marine biologists per capita in La Paz than anywhere else in the world. La Paz boasts eight active marinas that are filled to capacity with ocean-going yachts and boats, compared with only one in Cabo San Lucas.
